Triple Frown "Beautiful Anguish"

Awesome mix of both pop punk and rock an roll. This cd brings the feeling of bad religon and puddle of mudd, trapt. The album is just smooth well configured, and just fun to listen to. This band slips right in mainstream but still sticks out with its unique sound.

MXPX "Panic"

Recording in their personal studio in Bremerton, Washington, with the legendary Gavin MacKillop, the boys put together yet another astonishing album. Being their eighth skate punk album in thirteen years, every album just gets better and better. Mike Herrera wrote a few songs with his friends Joe Gittleman, Mark Hoppus (of Blink 182), and Steve Soto.

Pillow Fight "TOMORROW I’M BRINGIN’ A GUN TO SCHOOL"

For a garage recording in LA the band wrote, produced, and recorded everything themselfs, mixing and mastering was excellently done by Gabriel Heredia (Avilon Studios). This street punk rock band knows what they are doing and is doing it well. Doing what they do best on stage, thru an album is a hard thing to keep the same great sound. The album title “Tomorrow I’m Bringin’ A Gun To School” expresses the views of most rockers. Overall a great band to listen to, and a lot of fun in this album. The album is available at most Southern California independent music stores and online at www.pillowfightpunks.com

Dredg

Working with (Producer) Terry Date (who also recorded and mixed this album) the band put together an awesomely artistic album of alternative, progressive, and experimental music. With at times soft, smooth rhythms, and a soothing piano, while other times getting true rock and roll. Songs express the bands feelings of religion, relationships, friendships, and many life experiences. Overall a great album for the office, at home, and on the road.

All-American Rejects “Move Along”

Being the first “Major Label” record to put out, the boys had an incredible, enjoyable, and enlightening experience working with Howard Benson (Producer) and his crew. They got all the prep work (to make a great album) done before going into the studio. When it was time to record it was almost everyday for about six weeks. The quality of this album is unbelievable as the band wouldn’t settle with just anything, they worked hard to make sure their toughest critics would be satisfied. Without agendas and intense messages, this album is filled with enjoyable melodies and a great listening experience.

Genuine Imitations “22 Songs About Hampsters”

The Genuine Imitations new album “22 Songs About Hamsters.” is gaining much respect within their local music scene, as it is honestly music we wouldn’t mind waking up to every morning. With catchy songs, great solos, and a fun storyline of love, politics, and ridiculousness, it will brighten your day. Originally recording for only two days with ten songs the band went back into the studio to record “condelzza rice dance party” which completes the album. Mixing a do-it-yourself style recording with mastering by John Golden (Sonic Youth), the album sounds great. You can order a copy from the bands MySpace site, www.myspace.com/genuineimitations

All For Nothing “Creating a Downfall”

All For Nothing “Creating a Downfall”

Working on the songs for this album for a year prior to recording helped for one day of recording and two of mixing/mastering. Andrew Keating (Engineer @ Laughing Tiger studios) did a great job on this record as it is getting reviews from magazines such as AMP! “Straight Line System” is probably the catalyst for this record. The chorus "What we created, could be our downfall..." represents the message of this band. Available for about $5, the only reason for not getting this album is if you don’t like good music. The CD is available at shows and online though Interpunk.com or www.allfornothing.org. The message of this album is: “Everything we do, everything we create, is just paving the road to failure. It sounds bleak but unfortunately it's true.”

Son of Adam “Dawn Treader”

Son of Adam “Dawn Treader”

This record is full of reverb, most natural, some due to a low budget. While being on a business trip David wrote the four song EP. Guitar-less he went to Wal-Mart to pick up a cheep kids guitar to work out the melodies. Recording and mixing were done sporadically throughout the month of May. David Orenday not only self-wrote, recorded, produced, and did the artwork, he printed, cut, folded, and glued each CD by hand. The album title came from C.S. Lewis' "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader"; the fifth book in “The Chronicles of Narnia" series. You can buy the album from David on MySpace at www.myspace.com/sonofadam

The Sixfifteens “Let’s Not Think About It”

With air play on college radio and being recognized by magazines such as The Metroland, The Big Takeover, and Rolling Stone, The Sixfifteens are getting some attention with their self-produced but high-quality indie/ rock album. Recorded in a home studio, taking a few months to get everything at its best. This great album is sold in many record stores and online at iTunes, amazon, www.thesixfifteens.com or www.fakechapter.com (Fake Chapter Records).

Lance Whalen "she's not coming tonight"

Lance Whalen "she's not coming tonight"

Lance has been heard on a few radio stations on the east coast and also at CBGB’s NYC gallery. I think he has a great sound. His voice is warming, and his guitar is soothing, but being from Nashville he puts in a southern sound at the same time, and that makes it interesting.
This CD doesn't get old because the sound keeps changing. It took four years to make and started in 1998 as a band project, but the band split during the process, then he began recording as a solo artist from that point, you can hear the bands influence on "oh baby oh". During the recording process his girlfriend was murdered while studying abroad. While it took him a while to recover from that, when he began recording again his style had changed. And you can hear as the cd progresses. It was an interesting recording process bringing in all kinds of musicians to pitch in.
Most of the recording was done only in three takes or less, except for track 3, falling again. Often it was the first take. On track five the song “By Right”, is a poem by his departed lover. Lance really just wanted to go out and see what happened, so he put recording gear in the car, it was winter time and he drove downtown. He was gonna speak the poem on a street corner, but a fellow that he knew came up and said “Hey can I sing too?” Lance said “I guess so, but I don’t have a melody for this or a guitar.” So the man ran in someone’s house there on the street and grabbed an old acoustic guitar and they just did it there on the spot. The whooshing you hear is late night traffic.
I also took a listen to the 7" that Lance Whalen (playing “Out of Tune Love Song”) split with Andrew English (playing “My Sweet One”). Even though they only play one song each, I think it came out great. Lance said they had a lot of fun recording on an old 4 track at his home, and making vintage clothes to raise money to make the record and do radio promo. Check out lancewhalen.com to find out how to get a copy of this album and his 7”.

The Murdocks " Surenderender"

The Murdocks " Surenderender"

The Murdocks record in about three months. Well it took two months to recored, and in between they went on tour. They approached it with producer Tim Dittmar from the perspective that they would try to make each song sound different. On most records, bands find a good sound and stick with it the whole record. The Murdocks tried to have each song sound like it was recorded in a different studio with completely different gear, and it worked. Whatever would best match the song. On “Bloody Murder,” Franklin sang into a telephone answering machine and then put a mic on it and used that as the lead vocal track. Two of the songs they just busted out in the studio without ever having played them before (”Saddest Star” and “Segue”). Franklin had to learn how to play a little bit of piano for the bonus track but explained to me “it wasn’t too hard.” I think they achieved their goal. Making a unique sounding record with emphasis on creative production while still trying to make the songs flow.
Later in their career they might not have the opportunity to make more "lo-fi" type records so they wanted to take advantage of it. I think they would rather have a record that sounded more interesting than some piece, like that stuff on the radio with nothing but loud vocals and tons of reverb. The Murdocks did a lot of tracks live because that is how they translated best energy-wise. It at times makes them seem too "indie" for some people. Nevertheless they wanted to try to make the energy of the live show come across on the album, which isn’t an easy thing to do.
There are a lot of re-occuring themes. Death, Girls, Dead girls, and Family stuff. The stories of lots of people they know and have met. Don't really know what more to say beyond that.
You can buy the CD online at cduniverse.com or the-murdocks.com

Power Movement Project "Belief Upon Arrival"

Power Movement Project "Belief Upon Arrival"

This group has been featured on MTV’s University (college MTV), FOX SPORTS 54321 (mobile skate park series). And have opened for Busta Rymes, Fishbone, Eek-A-Mouse, Bone Thugs, and many more. The CD took about three months to record. It was produced by Frank Marchand (Jimmies Chicken Shack). The band had a blast recording, and was living the rock and roll life style the whole time.
Through their music, PMP is saying that no matter what vocals are on a track or what genre you get placed the music in. It has to be 100% original! No songs can sound the same! PMP is made up of VERY different musical backgrounds. They are influenced by musicians from The Police to OutKast to Primus and so on, but together it all works. Lyrically I think they are trying to say that mentally, musically, and spiritually this planet needs a change! A revolution of the masses, and a positive awakening. The only outlet is music, they have no political ties or stuff like that to voice their word, so they do it through the MOVEMENT!
You can check out their website at computethemadness.com and also buy the CD online or find out where to get it in a music store near you.

MiGGs "insOmnia"

MiGGs "insOmnia"

MiGGs (from San Francisco, CA) is a fortunate band, fortunate because they are making it to the top. Being on tours such as the “Virgin College Mega Tour” and opening for bands like Cake, Gomez, Kid Rock, and Aerosmith. Their first album sold ten thousand copies without a record label to back them up! The band has recently signed on with 33rd street records.

I love the music on this CD, but I also love how they made it. The album was recorded in parts, as they wanted to do it themselfs at first (just like “Anyway”, the first album). But after realizing that they wanted to get more out of the recording, they turned to Gavin MacKillop (Goo Goo Dolls, Barenaked Ladies, Sugarcult), his people said NO, and so they where going to go with Ken Lewis. At the last minute Gavin called back and told them he would work with them. So they canceled the flight to NY and went to LA to record with Gavin. The album took about a month because Gavin is crazy in the best way and showed the guys how the tracks lay down and work together. After Gavin got sick and couldn’t work for a month (while MiGGs was just twiddling their fingers) the band went on to write “Suddenly Wonderful,” ”Maybe,” and ”Perfect.” They decided to record the three songs with and old friend and renowned studio guy, JC Convertino. Soon after, Gavin was ready to mix and finish the album. The band is glad they waited until early ‘05 instead of the big holiday season (when a lot of bigger bands release albums).
Needless to say the album is about insomnia. Since they wrote most of the songs suffering from insomnia, in the late nights and early mornings. If you listen to all fourteen tracks you will get a feel of it. Ten p.m. is “Suddenly Wonderful,” anything can happen at five a.m. so “Maybe” is the song for that. MiGGs isn’t trying to teach you or change the world with their lyrics, instead they want to connect with you and how you are feeling and thinking. They are just guys writing about relationships with parents, girls, friends, and band-mates, it’s all in there.
You can buy both MiGG’s albums on iTunes and some Tower Records locations, but always at towerrecords.com

Tribal Mentality (woody woodham)

Oooook were to start. I personally thought this cd was a joke when i got it, The
musical part of it sounds as if that it was made on a mac computer, to fake sounding. After
the fact that it sounds home made alot of the timing is off and solos are just sloppy. If i
had to see this band live i would want to get hammered and get into a fight just to get
kicked out because walking out is to dignified. The vocals change from different styles and
alot of time don't even match the music. Even in one part he sounded like randy newman. For
the most part it is music and someone has spent time working on it. It is a solo project
except a few tracks. If you are into indie music you might enjoy this but i still think its
a strecth.

would i reconmend it? not really, except for target parctice.
see them live? nope

Sigur Ros - Heima (DVD Review)

Before i get into the review of Heima, let me brief you with me finding about Sigur Ros. A little while ago I got this DVD, Heima. I have never heard of SR, so one day when I popped the DVD into the player and just used it as background music while i was doing something. With no expectations or ideas how this band will sound. No more then 5 minutes into the film my eyes did not leave the TV until the video was over. I put in the second DVD and my eyes didn't leave the TV until that one was over as well.

Heima - In 2006 Sigur Ros toured the world returning home to IceLand so play a series of free unannounced shows to make the dvd Heima that means At Home. This DVD was filmed in 16 locations on IceLand, showing the beauty of the island and the people that live there. This is a 97 minute documentary with songs from all four Sigur Ros albums Hljómalind / Starálfur, Heim, Hvarf-Heim, and one new song titled "Heima" along with unreleased material.

This DVD starts out with a live performance and shows us how they are live in concert, extremely creative and interesting way of lighting on the stage. Then playing is a series of places through the island, in houses, outside and venues. I think the places they picked to play makes their music mean even that much more and add more passion to their music. This DVD has some of the best cinematography i've seen, with very unique shots and really shows the beauty of IceLand.

If you have never heard of Sigur Ros let me try and tell you a little about their music. SR is a band from Reykjavík, IceLand and They have a mellow sound but sometimes can pick up and get pretty energetic. The lead Voc Jón Þór Birgisson has a very unique sound to his voice and singing. The bands timing is beyond exceptional, perfect, and is something to look for when watching this DVD. This band is made up of truly talented musicians, in this DVD they all switch around from the piano, to the guitar to the drums, and to me being able to have diversity in your musical talent impressive me.

This band is not for everyone, it is not for the musically bland or the people that only like a band because they do back flips on stage and spit fire balls.

This band is defiantly one of the most amazing bands I've ever heard. GO buy this DVD, check them out, go listen,

Please watch this DVD trailor's for the Heima DVD
